What Is the Best Angle for a Dog Ramp?
If you are planning to buy a dog ramp, make sure you add the correct one. The ideal range of the slope of a dog ramp is between 18 and 26 degrees. According to AKC“If your dog is having trouble maneuvering the stairs in your house or if you live on one level and he’s unused to climbing any stairs, consider a dog ramp.” While purchasing, make sure that the incline of the ramp is not too steep, and don’t go for a larger degree angle because it will be more difficult for your pup to walk on the ramp.[1]
Types of slopes:
- A ramp with an easy slope is recommended for senior dogs or dogs with a hip/leg injury.
- The normal slope dog ramp is suitable for all types of dogs. Especially, for the puppies, because they can easily climb up and maintain their balance on the ramp.
- A climber slope dog ramp is only recommended for a healthier dog with no joint issues. Because this one is a bit inclined, and tricky to maintain balance and walk freely.[2]
Keeping all these points in mind and according to your dog’s mobility, select a good ramp for him and train him well.
FAQs
How do you measure a dog for a ramp?
Before buying a ramp for your dog, it’s important to take up the measurements. If you have a medium size adult dog then it is suggested to go for the ramp with a wider space. And if you have small breeds then narrow ramps will work, you can easily place a toy and your pooch on that ramp. So, small breeds will require 11-12 inches, on the other hand, 22-24 inches is enough for medium size adult dogs.
Are dog ramps or stairs better?
Generally, dog ramps are a better option than stairs because a ramp is easier to access. Especially, if you are parenting a small breed or senior dog because they face difficulty in getting in the car, couch, bed, or any higher surface. As per AKC “dog stairs and ramps can also make life easier for some very small dogs or breeds with short legs and long bodies, like Dachshunds and Corgis.” Using a ramp won’t give strain on their joints, and they won’t get an injury.
How do you determine the angle of a dog ramp?
The angle of a ramp is determined by the slope or steepness of the ramp along with the base of the triangle. The slope should be 2-1 or less, and the height should be of 2xheight.
